Hmm. What to do over the summer? We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, this is not a listings site. It’s just too bloomin’ hard, especially when there are other people doing a good job of it already. They loves it, they do.
Here at the HQ of twickerati (Twickenham’s premier hyperlocal blog since 2010) we’ve decided to let you do the hard work.
* Got something coming up you want to plug? Bingo! Add a comment. You can even include a link if you want.
* Been to something local you think others will enjoy? Well, bully for you. Want to mention it on here or even write a short paragraph about it? Excellent. Now we’re talking!
Let’s hear your tips and reviews for sizzling summer fun in twemendous Twickenham. And if it’s cheap or free then so much the better.
Here are just a few things to get you warmed up:
Shakespeare al fresco – to Sat 30th July
If you like theatre and love a bit of fresh air then the much respected Richmond Shakespeare Society is currently performing Twelfth Night by the Naked Ladies in York House Gardens. The final show is on July 30th so be quick if you want to experience this Shakespeare comedy in a great outdoor location. Details here.
Life’s a beach! – 27 July to 21 August
“Nul points” for the originality of the headline but we like the idea of the beach being created at Champions Wharf on Twickenham Riverside. Real Sand. Play Rangers. Stuff to do. An ice cream van nearby! Opens 27 July. Was scheduled to run to 7th Aug but now running to 21st. Details here.
England v Wales Rugby – Sat 6th August
Rugby at the beginning of August? It’s madness gone mad. But that’s what’s happening. It’s all about the World Cup prep. You know the drill: a sell out at Twickenham stadium; traffic congestion; people drinking a lot. Enjoy. We’re not touting but if you’re local and have spare tickets, this very site could put you in touch with people who might want them.
Olympic bike race – Sunday 14th August
The London-Surrey Cycle Classic will see a bunch of top “roadies” testing out the London 2012 Olympic road race course. It will pass through Twickenham and Teddington and should be quite a spectacle watching these super fit lycra clad maniacs speed past. Roads will be closed so you’ll need to be aware of that too. Details here.
Art at OHG – August
Orleans House Gallery is running a range of art activities for children of all ages. These cover painting, printing, drawing, sculpture and even textiles. Details of all the sessions and what’s going on more generally at the gallery are here.
Rugby – Sat 3rd September
Without wanting to wish away the summer, it’s hard to believe that the new season is not too far away. The traditional “London double header” takes place at Twickenham stadium on Saturday 3rd September. Your chance to see local side Harelequins take on London Irish, while Wasps do battle with Saracens in the other game. Check it out here.
Outdoor Cinema in MHP – Sat 3rd & Sun 4th Sept
Nat West Film First will be screening the new film One Day in Marble Hill Park. This gives Nat West customers the chance to see the film of the book everyone was reading last year in the picturesque setting of Marble Hill Park. You haven’t read the book? It’s the one which traces the lives of two people over the same date in July over twenty years or so. Some idiot reviewer somewhere probably called it “a witty, bittersweet combination of the best bits of ‘chick lit’ and ‘bloke book'”. Check the details carefully to ensure you fit the NatWest criteria. Link is here.
Bearcat Comedy – Sat 3rd Sept
After its summer recess, the Bearcat Comedy Club returns with its usual top quality line up of stand up comedians. Every Saturday. It’s joined on to the Turks Head pub in St Margarets.
Great River Race – Sat 17th Sept
A great spectacle as a flotilla of all sorts of floating craft battle their way from Docklands to Ham. It starts at around 1.40pm reaches Richmond Bridge at about 4.30m. Details: http://www.greatriverrace.co.uk
But we’d love to hear about your summer ideas and experiences on this site, so come back soon, have a nice day, don’t go changing and remember that success begins with a single step. And that there’s no “I” in “teamwork”. But most of all, remember that you are this site’s greatest asset. Probably.
